SYLLOGISM

TOGA

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears....

Caesar love Brutus the honourable man,

an ambition man loves no one,

and thus Caesar is not ambitious.

Caesar is a good friend,

an ambitious men is not a good friend,

therefore Caesar is not an ambitious man

The ambitious man holds no friends

Caesar is a faithful and just as a friend

Ambitious men are not faithful and just as a friend

Thus, Caesar is not an ambitious man

PLATO’S MYTH OF THE CAVE

“At the first stage are prisoners, tied so that they can perceive only shadows on the back of the cave. The shadows are cast by artificial objects, and the light is thrown by a fire. Their only reality would be the shadow of these artificial objects. With enlightenment a prisoner might be turned to see first the artificial objects, then the fire, then the real world, and last of all the Sun. Each stage would be difficult and unfamiliar, and at the end the enlightened subject would be unable to communicate his knowledge to the prisoners remaining below. Plato says that the ascent stands for the upward journey of the soul into the region of the intelligible, identified with that which is alone truly real. The myth may be read purely as an invitation to think, rather than to rely on the way things appear to us, but it is often used as an open invitation to belief in esoteric and mystical states of knowing”

My own version of Plato’s myth

The prisoners

EUPHEMISTIC LANGUAGE

Article on euphemistic language...

Why White Lies are More Dangerous than You Think?

Have you ever noticed how you trust people less when you see them lie to someone else? Take heed. Even if we are honest with those we deem important, when we lie to others in their presence, it chips away at our credibility.

But, before we take the high road, let’s review the statistics. We lie a lot – more than we’d like to believe. Most people tell a substantive lie on average 1.5 times a day, according to research by psychologist and lying expert Bella de Paulo. While we can only detect other people lying about 50% of time, or no better than chance, subjects in De Paulo’s studies reported that, on average, 1 in 7 lies they told were discovered, as far as the liars could tell. And we pay the price. People who lie more often were also found to have lower quality relationships.

You might say that not all lies are equal. White lies, for instance, are harmless. Not so. In addition to causing increased suspicion and doubt from those who uncover them, psychologist Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts Amherst “found that ‘white lies’ do have consequences and that the danger of telling them is they lead us toward being more dishonest.” Also, according to Feldman, “if you find out your boss has lied to you; it makes you feel OK to tell lies to your boss.” Particularly concerning is the negative impact these lies can have on the sense of trust that unites your organization.

Our credibility determines our potency as leaders. When we are caught lying directly or seen lying to someone else, we lose a degree of credibility and trust from those around us. Particularly when such lies are self-serving, colleagues may begin to question whether you are pushing your idea out of the best interest of the company or for your own agenda. This impacts our ability to get buy-in for our ideas and creates organizational waste – wasted energy doubting others’ motives and wasted time expending extra effort to win people over. Simply put, trust = efficiency. When mutual trust exists in an organization, this waste is diminished, and decisions can be made more quickly.

Ultimately, white lies are short-sighted. We may avoid conflict or gain an advantage in the short-term, but when we are caught or witnessed by others, we undermine the effectiveness of our communication, the strength of our relationships, and potentially even the trusting culture of a business. And most importantly, while trust and credibility are easy to lose, they are incredibly difficult to earn back.

* white lies = lie

*degree of credibility = capability on doing certain things

*self-serving = expedient or convenient

MY IMPRESSION REGARDING ON THE ARTICLES

THINKING FOLLY BY ECKHART TOLLE

The author states that thinking can cause a lot of drawbacks in one’s life. Basically, I don’t agree with this article as thinking is compulsory in order to gain knowledge and to differentiate what is good and bad. Therefore, thinking is a must for every individual and it simply cannot be define as a ‘disease’. Ones need to thinking order to gain knowledge, if there is no thinking process in ones life, and then things would be in chaos.

MAN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS BY ROBERT GREENE

This article emphasize on the role of man and women in gaining the power. The author states that, man and women are players because they have vision to conquer the authority as it is one of their agenda. There are many approaches that these people commit, some might have pose as friends, some might act like he or she is naïve. Therefore, people could not distinguish their hidden intention. Besides, they also hides their true colours in order to make people trust them thus, people are giving these ‘players’ an opportunity to oppress others. Basically, both man and women are the greatest players which ever lived.

THE DEGREE OF HAPPINESS BY BERTRAND RUSSELL

This particular article mainly covers on the level of happiness that exists in someone’s life. Personally, I don’t agree with the author, Bertrand Russell as I think that happiness can not be measured by ones line of work. It is ridiculous to say that the scientist is happier than the artist because of different living standard. Besides, the way the artist attain happiness cannot be compared with the scientist. Happiness is abstract and there is no definition of happiness. Everyone might have different perception towards happiness as the way they live also altered from the others.

THE JEWS AND THEIR DECEITS BY ADOLF HITLER

Adolf Hitler was known for his detestation towards the Jews. Therefore, he comes out with this particular article which highlights on the significance of killing the Jews. I agree with the author as The Jews have done many wickedness and immorality conduct towards the German. They are hiding their true colours in order to take advantages on others. This shows how wicked they are. They try to conquer German economy just for their own sake. Once the Nazi get rid of the Jews, the world will be at peace as there is no other uproar from this kind of ‘monster’.

the worst movie ever... PLAN 9 FROM THE OUTER SPACE !!

Movie Review on "Plan 9 From the Outer Space"

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE

"What makes this a legend and an icon among the multitudes of bad movies? That it is entertaining, despite (or because of) all its faults, must be a significant reason. People watch films to be entertained. Ed Wood's masterpiece is definitely entertaining. The dialog in "Plan 9 from Outer Space" is priceless. Sometimes it even makes sense. Most of the time it flies completely in the face of reason or contradicts things we watched. Eros' explanation of how the solarmanite bomb works, using a gas can and old rags in the analogy, is really funny. In almost every case, the preposterous lines are delivered with utmost sincerity. The commander that Eros and Tanna report to at intervals is an exception to that rule. He seems nonplussed and even rolls his eyes after one choice exchange."

My personal view

When I was watched this movie for the first time with my classmates, I was like “what is this? Do we call this as a ‘movie’?”… That was my personal view towards this movie. However, when I think about it, I find out that the movie had entertained me. Even though the plot was terrible, but I manage to understand what the director are trying to convey. Watching this movie makes me happy as I enjoyed the work by Ed Wood. It is still worth watching this movie as it posses sense of humour and everyone can enjoy watching this. It is not so ‘bad’ after all.
